‘Stories from Stats’ on agenda

WILDOMAR —- Family history will be discussed at Wednesday’s meeting of the Lake Elsinore Genealogy Society.

“Turning Genealogy into Family History: Creating Stories from Stats,” will be presented by speaker Jean Wilcox Hibben, who is a board-certified genealogist. Hibben has been involved in family research for more than 30 years and is a member of a number of genealogical groups in the area.

The meeting will run from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Community Room of the Mission Trail Library, 34303 Mission Trail in Wildomar.

Talk planned on staghorn ferns

TEMECULA —- A talk on ferns is on tap when the Temecula Valley Rose Society will be held Thursday.

Master Gardener Charles T. Robinson will give his presentation, “Staghorn Ferns, their culture and propagation.”

A light lunch will be available after the program.

Sierra Club to hear about tortoise

TEMECULA —- The Agassiz’s desert tortoise will be discussed at Thursday’s meeting of the Sierra Club, Santa Margarita Group.

The program, featuring Kristin H. Berry, will include an in-depth discussion on the tortoise’s population in the California Mojave Desert and the battle to protect the 3,600 acres that have been designated by the Bureau of Land Management as a solar energy zone. The area is also a prime location for this threatened species of desert tortoise. Berry has worked for the Bureau of Land Management and now conducts research.

The meeting will begin with social time at 6:30 p.m. at the Rancho California Water District Headquarters, 42135 Winchester Road in Temecula.

Outlets director to give talk

LAKE ELSINORE —- “Ready, Set, Shop!” will be the theme for the Lake Elsinore Women’s Connection luncheon Saturday.

The event will feature guest speaker Nicole Arend, marketing director for the Lake Elsinore Outlets, to give insider tips on how to get the best deals, navigating the Outlets and how to stay in the loop when new items arrive.

Former TV news anchor and reporter Carol Lebeau also will talk about how to find “An Anchor for Life.”

The cost is $15, which includes lunch and opportunity door prizes.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Links at Summerly, 29381 Village Parkway in Lake Elsinore.

Parrot owners to gather with pets

MENIFEE —- Southwest County parrot owners are invited to gather when “The Beak Squad” meets Sunday.

The group is dedicated to providing avian education for parrot owners. It’s a social environment for parrot owners who want to meet people with similar avian interests.

Membership applications and approval are required. Parrots are welcome at the group’s meetings, which are held at 4 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month.

Military group to meet Sunday

TEMECULA —- The United States Submarine Veterans Inc. Trieste base will hold its monthly meeting Sunday.

The group will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. at Carrow’s restaurant, 24640 Madison Ave. in Murrieta.

The group is seeking new members who are active-duty or retired members of the military who were qualified in submarines.

Talk planned on civil war ancestors

TEMECULA —- A talk on finding Civil War ancestors is planned when the Temecula Valley Genealogical Society meets Monday.

The guest speaker, Michael Sorenson, is a nationally recognized expert on the Civil War.

Meetings are free; guests are welcome.

Although the group typically meets on the second Monday, the meeting for this month was pushed back a week.

The meeting begins with social time at 5:30 p.m. in the Conference Room at Temecula City Hall, 41000 Main St.

Oath Keepers to meet March 21

MENIFEE —- The Inland Empire Oath Keepers will about urban survival when the group meets March 21.

The group is a nonpartisan association of individuals who swore an oath to support and defend the U.S. Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. It is open to active and retired military, reservists, National Guard, peace officers, veterans, active and retired first-responders including police and fire personnel, and citizen patriots.

The featured speaker will be Joe Bierly, of CTC Inc., who will talk about “Urban Survival” and discuss the key points of: situational awareness and how to develop it, as well as factors that degrade it; danger areas, including examples and specific techniques on how to deal with them; the OODA Loop and why it matters; and surveillance and counter-surveillance.

The meeting will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Menifee Rural Center, 31850 Haun Road.

Talk set on obtaining benefits

TEMECULA —- Members of National Alliance on Mental Illness, Temecula Valley will hear about SSI benefits when the group meets March 21.

The guest speaker will be an SSI lawyer from the Law Office of David Shore in Oceanside, who will talk about how to best obtain Supplemental Security Income benefits and how to effectively appeal a claim if turned down by the Social Security office.

The meeting will follow a “share care” time for members at 6 p.m. at Meadowview Clubhouse, 41050 Avenida Verde in Temecula.

League plans open house

TEMECULA —- The Assistance League of Temecula Valley will hold an open house event on March 22.

The event will be a time for people interested in becoming members of the national nonprofit to learn about the organization’s mission and services offered throughout Southwest County.

AAUW plans Wardrobe Party

TEMECULA —- A Wardrobe Party will be held by the American Association of University Women on March 24.

The fundraiser will include a continental breakfast and an opportunity to win door prizes. For people unable to attend the event, a mention of AAUW while shopping at Soma of Chico’s in The Promenade from March 22 to 25 will ensure that 10 percent of the sale is donated to the Temecula Valley AAUW.

Proceeds will be used for scholarships for women going to a four-year college and Tech Trek math/science camp for local seventh-grade girls.

Tickets cost $10.

Games, socks collected for patients

TEMECULA —- Members of the Rotary Club of Temecula Valley — New Generations are collecting new, unwrapped board games and fuzzy socks through the end of March to donate to the teens and children at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

The Rotarians will deliver the items to the children in April, during a day designed to boost the spirits of both patients and parents.
