Family Heirloom- and Home History-Themed Blog The Houstory Hearth Joins GeneaBloggers Community

Houstory Publishings family heirloom- and home history-themed blog, The Houstory Hearth, recently joined genealogist Thomas MacEntees GeneaBloggers group.

GeneaBloggers is an online community of Genealogy– and family history-related blogs that MacEntee a nationally known and respected genealogist started in 2009. Its a free resource that helps to showcase more than 2,800 blogs from around the world, all covering a wide variety of topics related to the Genealogy universe.

I could see what was on the horizon in terms of the growth of social media and how it could improve the Genealogy experience, said MacEntee of why he started GeneaBloggers. I wanted to organize a community of these bloggers within the greater Genealogy community,

The most popular type of blog showcased at GeneaBloggers is one that focuses on the bloggers own family history, MacEntee said. However, the community also features blogs from Genealogy educators, vendors and professional genealogists.

MacEntee runs the site as a labor of love, as he states at the GeneaBloggers Web site, although monetary donations are accepted. Contributions help him to defray the costs of Web site hosting, domain names and general maintenance.

The conditions for GeneaBloggers membership are clear and simple: you must either author a blog related to Genealogy and family history, or you are a reader of these types of blogs.

Based on these requirements, The Houstory Hearth is a good fit for the community, said MacEntee.

Blogs like The Houstory Hearth play an important role in the Genealogy community and not in the way you might think, he said. Yes, vendor blogs are great to advertise new services and products and to build a consumer base. But those vendors blogs that are most successful seem to offer educational content about family history research in general, and not just by using the vendors product.

Houstory Publishing Marketing Director Dan Hiestand agreed with that sentiment, and said being a part of the GeneaBloggers community has provided a sizeable boost to the traffic The Houstory Hearth has received.

People come to our blog because we provide valuable content on home history research, family heirloom preservation and Genealogy in general, and our readers appreciate that, said Hiestand. Thomas has been a big help not only to us, but to the entire industry. He has done a great job of making the Genealogy world a smaller, more accessible place for its residents.
