Genealogical Society hosts program

The Niagara County Genealogical Society will be hosting the free program “Military Records and Resources for Genealogists” at 7 p.m. on May 30, at 215 Niagara St., Lockport.

It would be hard pressed to find an ancestor who has not served in the Armed Forces of the United States. The information found in military records is an often over-looked gold mine for genealogist. The information you get from pension records can enable you to piece together your family.

No one kept better records than the U.S. Government and when it comes to military records they left no stone unturned. In this class society member Jim Lawson, will go over the three types of military records; Service records, Pension Records and Military (Unit) Records.

Lawson will tell how and where to search, as well as how to order military records. Lawson is a professional genealogist (www.kindredquest.com) who has been researching family history for more than 15 years.

He is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogist, Western New York Genealogy Society, Niagara County Genealogy Society and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society. He is a volunteer at the Family History Center as well as a Family History Consultant. He also writes a monthly article for North Tonawanda Genealogy Club newsletter.
