Genealogists honored by proclamation

On Monday afternoon, Waverly Mayor Bob Brunkhorst proclaimed the month of October to be “Family History Month” in Waverly, and in part, the Bremer County Genealogical Society presented two books to the Waverly Public Library.

Society members Karen Shields, Mildred Bergmann, Jan Heinemann, Mary Buls, Bernice Kimball and Connie Heine were on hand in the city council chambers to witness Brunkhorst signing the proclamation.

In it, the mayor said, “Through genealogical research, we celebrate the reward of finding our ancestors and discovering who they were, and it is important that we as a society acknowledge and appreciate our ancestors and their contributions to our lives.”

The Bremer County Genealogical Society has partnered with the Iowa Genealogical Society and other such groups in the nation to establish October as Family History Month. The goal is to encourage preservation of family histories, vital records and to assist anyone interested in researching their ancestry.
