Longtime register of probate to give talk on records at genealogical …

With Bangor Public Library now observing summer hours, the next meeting of the Penobscot County Genealogical Society will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, in the Lecture Hall on the third floor at 145 Harlow St.

The speaker will be Susan Almy, longtime register of probate for Penobscot County. Having heard her talk on probate records at last year’s meeting of the Maine Genealogical Society, I can assure you that this is a talk you will want to hear.

Refreshments will be served.

The July 18 meeting will be a cookout for members at 6 p.m. at the Hampden Historical Society at the Kinsley House on Main Road. Penobscot County Genealogical Society will provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, rolls and drinks. But the group needs a head count in order to plan for food, and also an idea of what you might bring, such as salad, dessert, chips, pickles or drinks.

A meeting of the Washington County Historical and Genealogical Society will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Gates House, home of the Machiasport Historical Society, on Route 92 in Machiasport.

The guest speaker will be Jan Eakins of Portland, who will discuss “The Most Remarkable Event in the Life of this Town,” the story of how gold fever hit the Machiasport area during the California Gold Rush.

As an added attraction for the meeting day, the Machiasport Historical Society would like to invite those attending the Washington County Historical and Genealogical Society meeting on June 23 to attend their Appraisal Day as well.

The Gates and Cooper House will be open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for tours.

In addition, there will be the opportunity for professional antique appraisals, with one item for $10 or three for $20. Light lunches will be available, as well.

Mark your calendar to attend the meeting of the Maine Genealogical Society on Saturday, Sept. 22, in Brewer. More than 130 people attended last year’s MGS meeting in Bangor. I certainly learned a lot and hope to attend this year’s meeting.
