The “Master Death Index File” is a public database that anyone can view. It contains the social security number and other private information pertaining to the decedent.

The purpose of the entry in the “Master Death Index” is to prevent fraud. There is not good reason to prevent this entry. Remember, your SSN is property of the SSA, not you.
