Estes Park Genealogical Society hosts seminar Aug. 11 Meeting in the Estes … – Estes Park Trail

The Estes Park Genealogical Society will hold its second seminar for the summer of 2012. The society will meet at the Estes Valley Public Library in the Hondius Room on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be two speakers, Mona Lambrecht and Julie Miller.

Lambrecht specializes in researching history at the local level. She focuses on placing individuals and families into the historical context of their communities. Earning her masters degree in history at Boston’s Northeastern University, she has worked on a variety of community-based projects in Boulder, Denver, and the Boston area that include history websites, museum exhibits, and a documentary. Working primarily as an independent historian, genealogist, and lecturer, Lambrecht has also been an affiliate professor at Metropolitan State College of Denver, teaching American and Colorado history. One lecture will be “Taking Stock: Identifying Holes in Your Research and Developing a Solid Research Plan.” This lecture provides various ideas in developing timelines, document analysis and creating research plans for organizational and research success. Her second lecture will be “Getting Organized: Planning a Research Trip.” Whether you are researching locally or planning a long-distance road trip, gather tips and tricks to stay organized and have an efficient research experience.

After lunch, guest speaker, Miller, who will speak on “An Ounce Of Prevention: Making A Genealogy Disaster Plan.” Genealogy documents, photographs, mementos, and databases are a family’s most prized possessions. They can be lost in an instant in the event of a disaster. This lecture focuses on how to plan before the crisis occurs, so that loss is minimized and your genealogy legacy is preserved for future generations.

Miller, C.G., is a professional genealogy researcher, lecturer, and writer. She is vice-president of the National Genealogical Society, 2010 and 2012, NGS conference chair, and is on the board of directors of the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors. Miller is past-president of the Colorado Genealogical Society and the Colorado Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists. She has been a volunteer at the National Archives-Rocky Mountain Region for 15 years. Miller is also an award-winning genealogy columnist for the Broomfield Enterprise.
