Genealogy workshop scheduled

Staff Report

Registration is now being taken for a genealogy workshop that will be held in February in collaboration with the Surry County Genealogical Society and the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History.

The classes that will be held on Tuesday evenings beginning on Feb. 7 will be taught by Esther Johnson.

Three classes will be held at the museum and there will be two field sessions, one at the Genealogy Room at Surry Community College and one at Register of Deeds office.

Matt Edwards, executive director of the museum, said these classes are perfect for those who want to find out more about their family tree.

“For those people who are interested in tracing their roots and learning how to work through that process, this is a tremendous resource to learn about the process. So many times today, we take for granted the genealogical research that we can do on the Internet, but at some point we have to delve into the hard paper records in order to continue your search. This class will give folks some direction in how to do that,” said Edwards.

Classes are $5 per session or free with a museum membership.

“We encourage people to register now, space is limited to 10 participants,” said Edwards.

To register for the classes, call the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History at 786-4478.
